1. Sustainable Urban Forests Coalition and the 2012 Farm Bill: Call to Action

 

The Sustainable Urban Forests Coalition will lead a webinar on October 6th, 12-1 p.m. Eastern time: 2012 Farm Bill Re-Authorization Recommendations – Part II

 

Now is a great time to participate! Leaders from the Sustainable Urban Forests Coalition will discuss their collective Farm Bill recommendations and need for grass-roots mobilization.  This webinar is a Call-To-Action.  Please distribute to your colleagues and fellow advocates actively working for healthier urban forests and vibrant communities.

2. Remembering Leader Wangari Maathai

 

Wangari Maathai, an environmental and human rights leader and first African woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize, passed away last week at age 71. She was an incredible leader for trees and the communities that live among them. We honor her amazing life.

We celebrate the inspiring work of the innovators that received the 2011 California Urban Forestry Awards! Please join us in commending these leaders for their great work:

 

Fred Anderson Award – Urban Forestry Volunteer of the Year

Awarded to an individual with outstanding community service who has demonstrated leadership in a project or organization and has shown exceptional dedication to improving California’s urban forests.

o   Jasmine Greer (Sacramento Tree Foundation NATURE Program Intern Extraordinaire)

o   Bryan Tassey (Tree Partners Foundation)

 

Durrell Maugh Founders Awards

Awarded to an individual, organization, or agency that has done the most in the past year to advance Urban Forestry Education in California.

o   Sacramento Tree Foundation – The Greenprint Project

o   Canopy - Viva La Urban Forest & Healthy Trees, Healthy Kids in Schools

Community Building with Trees

Awarded to a corporation, agency or elected official whose mission is not urban forestry related but has demonstrated a significant and noteworthy level of contribution to a community, region, or the State of California utilizing urban forestry or green infrastructure programs to contribute to and enhance quality of life. 

o   City of Santee – The SanTree Fest 2011

o   CA State Senator Fran Pavley

 

Best Urban Forestry Program

Awarded to the municipality, community, or business that has shown the most improvement in the past year or has demonstrated over a period of several years’ exceptional leadership, innovation, growth, and, community involvement in creating a consistent and well-managed urban forest.

o   First Runner-up, City of Thousand Oaks

o   Grand Prize - City of San Luis Obispo Downtown Foresters & City Tree Crew

 

Outstanding Urban Forestry Project

Awarded to an organization or community which completed an urban forestry project that:

•           Addressed two or more environmental or public safety issues

•           Involved the community and/or other organizations or agencies

•           Significantly enhanced the urban forest and livability of the community

 

o   First Runner Up – Sacramento Tree Foundation’s 2010 Acorn Harvest

o   Grand Prize - Community Services & Employment Training, Inc. (CSET) & Urban Tree Foundation
